Tuesday, February 28, 2023

Perthyn, a registered charity that provides support primarily to people with a learning disability, is looking for support workers to join their teams in Powys and Carmarthenshire.

Perthyn was formed in 2002 and is a not-for profit charity based upon principles of delivering high-quality, person-centred care and support and has consistently grown to become one of the largest and most highly-regarded charities in Wales.

Perthyn currently works in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Swansea, Cardiff, Shropshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire.

The people they support are at the heart of what they do. Perthyn works to improve the quality of life that people enjoy, with support that seeks to maximise their independence and skills.

They help each person to be involved in planning their support, using tools and methods best suited to them, encouraging them to look at the whole of their life, their dreams, aspirations and opportunities for skill development. They facilitate Person Centred Reviews to agree priorities and actions to help them achieve their goals.

Working with families is critical to ensuring that Perthyn delivers support to people in a person centred way.

Involvement of the family of the individuals they support in the Person Centred Reviews that they undertake is key, as they very often have valuable information on what has worked well in the past or reasons why something has not. In addition, their involvement at this stage can help them to feel positive about plans to change what an individual does and to give consideration to any identified risks.

Perthyn’s ethos of valuing people for their unique contributions whether they are supporting, providing or receiving support, actively contributes to their positive workplace culture and the high-quality support they provide.

All employees play a key role in enabling the people they support to live as independently as possible, to achieve their personal goals and become active and valued citizens within their own communities.

What is the difference between a support worker and a carer?

There are some key differences between being a support worker and a carer, at Perthyn their support is always person centred and encourages the people they support to do as much as they can helping them to develop and become more independent individuals.

Support work is an incredibly rewarding job and makes a fundamental difference to the lives of the people they support.

To attract people with varying levels of experience and provide opportunities for development and succession planning, they have a variety of positions from frontline support staff to community and regional managers and senior managers, along with specialist support services including positive behaviour support, compliance and regulation, human resources, recruitment, health and safety, IT, finance and payroll.

Although advantageous, previous experience working in social care is not necessarily required for all roles. More importantly employees should demonstrate they have the personal skills and attributes and are aligned with Perthyn’s ethos and values to have successful and rewarding careers.
